The Cab Ride I’ll Never Forget

I wanted to share this beautiful story by Kent Nerburn with you:

“Great moments often catch us unawares….”

There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a cab for a living.

It was a cowboy’s life, a gambler’s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss, constant movement and the thrill of a dice roll every time a new passenger got into the cab.

What I didn’t count on when I took the job was that it was also a ministry.

Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a rolling confessional. Passengers would climb in, sit behind me in total anonymity and tell me of their lives.

We were like strangers on a train, the passengers and I, hurtling through the night, revealing intimacies we would never have dreamed…

Lightbulbs - LEDs and CFLs offer more choices and savings

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 at 9:42pm. 164 Views, 0 Comments.

Contrary to what you might have heard, you can still buy most incandescent lightbulbs. But we've found few reasons you should. Our tests of 26 compact fluorescents and 10 light-emitting diodes found that though the newest bulbs might not be perfect, they last longer and use less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, and many of the problems of earlier versions have been overcome.

We were testing CFLs, which use about 75 percent less energy and last seven to 10 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs, even before stores began widely selling them. LEDs are the newest choice. They use even less energy than CFLs and are claimed to last for decades. And federal law is set to require most screw-in bulbs to be more efficient by 2014. This…

The Yard Item That Guarantees Sleep

Monday, August 8th, 2011 at 3:37pm. 155 Views, 0 Comments.

Need a nap but just can't seem to drift off? Then head out to your yard and take a swing in your hammock.

Turns out rocking isn't just for infants. New research suggests that rocking can ease the transition into sleep and improve sleep quality for grown-ups, too.

Swing Time
In a recent small study, healthy volunteers each took a 45-minute nap on successive afternoons -- once in a stationary bed and once in the bed that slowly rocked side to side. Then the researchers measured sleep cycles and sleep behaviors. Surprisingly, all the study participants fell asleep more quickly when rocking, and they also got more deep sleep -- known as the non-rapid eye movement phase of sleep. (Related: Did you know? Sleep may help your memory.)

Fidgeting pays off with fitness benefits

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011 at 9:58pm. 250 Views, 0 Comments.

Short bursts of light intensity physical activity like climbing stairs or doing housework can help improve fitness levels of people who are obese, Canadian researchers say.

Scientists at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., measured the duration and intensity of these sorts of movements and tested cardio-respiratory fitness levels of 43 men and 92 women who were inactive and abdominally obese.

The intensity of the activity seems to be particularly important, with a cumulative 30-minute increase in moderate physical activity throughout the day offering fitness benefits, the researchers reported in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

"These findings are important because many people do…
