About Mayland Heights
These communities area nested between the Deerfoot Trail on the west and Calgary's northeast industrial zone along and east of Barlow Trail. The residential community here lies between 24th Avenue in the north and Centre Avenue to the south. Mayland Heights is the community south of 8th Avenue (all streets start with "M"), that also has excellent views of downtown Calgary. On the eastern end of Mayland Heights is the television studio for Channels "2 & 7", Most of the area was built during the 1960s and is mostly single family detached dwellings. Northern Mayland Heights has a number of townhomes and low-rise apartments built during the late 1970s. The community is only a few minutes away from downtown and is well-served at the southern end by the Barlow Max Bell LRT station. The airport's main north-south runway begins its landing approach over Deerfoot Trail on the western edge of the community.
Schools
The area has two public elementary and a Catholic elementary school. High schools students attend schools outside the community. There is the DeVry College (computer-related career education) campus building just southeast of the community. The community is readily accessible to the University, SAIT and ACAD at the southern end via the LRT, at the northern end via the Great Circle bus route (#72/73).
Shopping
There are small plazas along19th Avenue, the main thoroughfare, with the largest one at the intersection of 8th Ave (connecting to St Georges Heights on the other side of the Deerfoot Trail). The area is close to the 3th Street NE shopping district with its several large malls including Marlborough in the south and Deerfoot in the north. Along 32nd Avenue are a number of popular restaurant chains, with a smaller number along 36th Street. .
Recreation
The community is dotted with small parks for green space. The community is close to the Nose Creek recreational pathway system (its on the other side of Deerfoot Trail), which connects to the Bow River and Elbow River pathways near the zoo. The city-owned golf course of McCall Lake is a mile north of Vista Heights, and the Elks Club is on the northwest side of Deerfoot and 16th Ave. Movie theatres are close-by at Marlborough and London Towne Square.
